Following a few weeks of superb golf down in Florida, the action moves on to Austin, Texas, where the annual WGC Dell Match Play will be held. Unlike the usual action on tour, match play is up this week, which means we’ll get to see some of the best in the business going head to head against each other.

Bookmaker Ratings prediction one: Alex Noren to make the quarter-finals – 7.00

Bookmaker Ratings prediction two: Ian Poulter to make the quarter-finals – 8.50

Alex Noren to make the quarter-finals

Alex Noren has been thrashing out the strong finishes of late, so much so that he looks a great bet to make the last eight of the WGC Dell Match Play. Sweden’s premier golf export, thanks somewhat to the tailing off of Henrik Stensen in the last few years, has been enjoying himself on the PGA Tour this season.

Noren has made the cut in each of his last six events, finishing T6, T45, T5, T26 and T12 in his last five. Such form points towards his game being in solid shape. If we add in that the man with 11 international victories is the best player in this field in terms of career win percentage when it comes to match play, the odds available for a quarter-final appearance really do start to look generous, especially since we’re talking about a player who’s finishing fifth and third in this event in two of his last three appearances.

Ian Poulter to make the quarter-finals

Another one at a big price is Ian Poulter, who throughout his career has tended to come alive under match-play conditions. We all know how strong Poults has been in the Ryder Cup, but that’s not the only match-play event that seems to get the best out of the Englishman.

Since this event switched to Austin Country Club back in 2016, Poulter has finished fifth in 2018, 17th in 2019 and ninth last year, while only three players in this field, in terms of win percentage, have better match-play records than Poulter, who has won 66.20% of his one-vs-ones. Such form is hard to ignore, and if you’re after a juicy play ahead of the action in Texas this week, take Poults to unleash the sort of game that has inspired Team Europe to victory in the past and play his way into the last eight.

Preliminary review and match prediction for the WGC Dell Match Play

This week, we take a break from the regular cut and thrust of stroke play, which dominates the elite golfing schedule. In Austin, players will compete under the match play format, much as we see on a yearly basis at the Ryder Cup.

This is how things will work. Players will be divided into groups of four, each group headed by one seeded player. The other three players in each group are drawn at random. Each player plays each other player in their group in a straight-up match. The winner of each group advances to the knockouts rounds, which see last-16, quarter-final and semi-final ties, before the final takes place on Sunday.

The course at Austin Country Club, as is usually the case with tracks designed by the renowned Pete Dye, isn’t the most forgiving, and players certainly won’t be able to play their most attacking thought without careful thought. Some long Par 5’s make life tough, as do uneven fairways and lots of cleverly placed sand traps.

Field News

A few notable absentees this week are Cameron Smith, who recently won the PLAYERS, and Rory McIlroy. Last week’s winner Sam Burns, Hideki Matsuyama and Harris English have also chosen not to take part in Texas. Otherwise, it’s a field packed with the best golfing talent on the planet, including world number one Jon Rahm, top-ten players Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and last year’s winner Billy Horschel.
