Key Stats

  • A South Africa win on Friday will see them win four ODIs in a row for the first time since March 2019
  • South Africa have won their last nine completed home day/night ODIs since losing to Pakistan in January 2019
  • Bangladesh have lost 29 of 33 away day/night ODIs at non-neutral venues
  • The tourists have lost their last six away day/night ODIs

Backdrop overshadowing series?

This white ball series will be followed by two Test matches, and it is the first time the teams have met since 2017.

Yet, with South Africa head coach Mark Boucher facing a disciplinary process by the sport’s national governing body on gross misconduct over allegations of racism. Boucher is among a number of Cricket South Africa (CSA) employees implicated in “tentative findings” by the Social Justice and Nation Building commission last month.

Also, the two-Test series will see some key players prioritise their gigs in the Indian Premier League over international duty. Eight of those players are in the squad for the ODIs.

SuperSport Park in Centurion

The average first innings score at Centurion over the last six completed ODIs is 247. The second innings overall averages 206.

South Africa have a strong record on home soil

The Proteas have won their last 19 international matches played against Bangladesh on home soil. That record included the last nine ODIs against the Tigers.

The hosts are buoyed from beating India 3-0 in their most recent ODI home series.

Hitman De Kock the man to back

South Africa’s Quinton de Kock scored 124 in his last ODI and is the obvious pick to be the top South Africa batter. Captain Temba Bavuma has also been in good recent form.

Rabada’s pace and guile make him backable

With six hauls of four wickets-or-more to his name, Kagiso Rabada will be the man the Proteas look to at the top and death of Bangladesh’s innings. He is the joint-third highest wicket taker (13) in matches between the two nations.

Rabada has bowled 48 balls at Tamim Iqbal in five ODIs, conceding 21 runs and taking the Bangladesh opener’s wicket twice. It’s a key match-up and one the South African should win after Tamim scored only 31 runs in the three ODIs against Afghanistan recently. Tamim had previously missed the tour of New Zealand with a thumb injury.

Lungi Ngidi and Wayne Parnell will support Rabada in the pace department and Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi provide the spin options.

Captain Tamim giving strong rallying cry

Bangladesh skipper Tamim has asked his side to replicate the approach that led to its Test win in Mount Maunganui.

Bangladesh had never won in New Zealand, but they took the first Test by eight wickets in a 1-1 series draw. They then won an ODI series 2-1 against Afghanistan and then drew a T20I series 1-1 against the same opposition.

Tamim is seeking similar resolve in South Africa, another country where they have never won before.

“We will try to do the same in South Africa,” Tamim said. “We know it will be difficult since they are a very, very good team in their own conditions. Ten years ago, I would have said that we want to play good cricket. Now I will say that we want to win there, and we will do what we have to do to win. If we get the result, very good. If we don’t, we will work harder.”

Tigers have never won in South Africa

Bangladesh have previously lost six Tests, nine ODIs, four T20Is and one ODI was abandoned due to rain. The nine ODI defeats included three heavy defeats by ten wickets and four by margins over than one hundred runs.

Shakib is back

Shakib Al Hasan has 282 ODI wickets and looks a great play to be the leading bowler for Bangladesh. He also needs just three runs to become the fifth player to score 400-plus runs in matches between the countries.

There was doubt whether Shakib would tour, but he is in South Africa and ODIs are his strongest format. He’s a play in both batting and bowling markets. And, if you think Bangladesh can win a match or two, may be worth a tickle as Player of the Match.

Who wins?

Overall South Africa lead all ODIs they have played against Bangladesh 17-4 since they first met in October 2022. But three of the four wins for Bangladesh have come across the last six matches played.

Bangladesh have picked up some key victories, after losing the first seven head-to-heads. They caused an upset at the 2007 Cricket World Cup and repeated that success at the 2019 World Cup. They also won a home ODI series in 20150.

Despite Bangladesh’s good performances of late, South Africa are the side to back, although the 1.20 price is justifiably skinny.
