Rafael Nadal started his title defence with a quick win over John Isner, but his current form is still sub-optimal and the level of opposition in Rome will only increase with each round. Rafael Nadal and Denis Shapovalov will play in the 1/16 finals of the Italian Open. The game will start on May 12 at 18:00 UK time.

Match Predict – Handicap (-5) for Nadal

Shapovalov looks unsteady in this tournament. Denis got past his opponents, but very problematically. With such a game it is hard to count on success against Rafa.

Total Games – Under 21

Nadal is determined to take the title here. The Spaniard can hardly be counted on to play half strength. Against Isner, Rafa proved his seriousness.

Preliminary review and match prediction for Rafael Nadal vs Denis Shapovalov

Rafael Nadal:

Rafa Nadal started his journey with a win over John Isner (6-3, 6-1). Contrary to expectations, this wasn’t the most difficult match for the Spaniard.

Apart from the fact that Isner did not serve dangerously with the first ball (which is his main trump card), it must be admitted that Rafa played brilliantly on the receiving end. Isner took only one game in the second set.

Nadal won two matches at the Madrid Masters last week before losing to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz Garfia (2-6, 6-1. 3-6).

Nadal had won three of his previous four tournaments in Rome.

Denis Shapovalov:

Shapovalov beat Lorenzo Sonego (7-6, 3-6, 6-3) in the first round. The match was a nervous one, Denis at one point had an argument with the referee, then began to react emotionally to the shouts from the stands, who were desperately supporting his opponent.

However, somehow Shapovalov managed to cope with his emotions and overpowered Sonego in the third set.

In the second round, Denis defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-4, 7-6). In this match, Shapovalov showed good tennis, not giving up a single game on his serve.

Shapovalov reached the semi-finals in Rome in 2020.
