So we finally reach the crux of the tournament at Euro 2016 for what I believe is a somewhat underwhelming final. It will be interesting to see how Portugal, and Cristiano Ronaldo in particular, deal with this big occasion after their dramatic loss to Greece in Euro 2004 on home soil. France were many people’s favourites before the tournament and their judgement has been shown to be correct as Didier Deschamps’ men look to be hitting good form at the right time.

I have said throughout the tournament that Portugal have been pretty poor and I do not think that is questionable with Fernando Santos’ side having won just the one game in 90 minutes in the entire tournament. However, they do seem to have luck on their side, and a lot of it! Every team who has gone on to win a tournament has had a serious amount of luck and perhaps this is the case for Portugal. If the Portuguese were to win on Sunday then I cannot remember a worse, or luckier team, to win an international tournament.

Having said that, you make your own luck and any team with Cristiano Ronaldo in it is capable of winning matches.

France are no doubt the favourites for this match. The last two tournaments that were held in France have been won by the French (1984 Euros and 1998 World Cup) and it is hard not to see them continuing this great record on home soil. Many were worried about the French defence after they lost the second half to Iceland in their quarterfinal match, however, against Germany they showed that they can be solid at the back, even against the best teams.

Additionally, they have the leading goalscorer at the tournament in Antoinne Griezmann, who has continued his good end-of-season form for Atletico Madrid, whilst they also have two of the other top five goalscorers at the tournament in Olivier Giroud and Dmitri Payet.

As this is the final of Euro 2016 I think it is only fair to give you a few options to go with rather than just the usual one.

Firstly I would offer the simple bet of France to win at Evens. As I mentioned in a previous tip, these latter stages of the tournament mean you get good value on the market. If Portugal and France had met in the group stage I doubt you would have got a decent return on a France win. Of course the pressure and atmosphere that surrounds a final makes it a different game but I would still back France.

If you fancy something a bit more interesting you could go with ‘Griezmann to score anytime and France to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1′ at 9/2. As mentioned earlier, Griezmann is in a rich vein of form right now so his confidence will be sky high and I struggle to see how the Portuguese defence can stop him. I also like these offers of a 1-0 , 2-0 or 2-1 win as they give you a variety of possibilities for a decent price. With this being a final it will be a tense affair with few goals and so you would back France to win by one of these score lines.

Lastly I will go for something a bit different. There are many punters out there who swear by betting on cards as they give a good return. No cards to be shown between the 31st minute up to half time at 11/10 looks a good bet. These may not be great odds but it is the best value you will get in the first half.

It is important to remember that the referee can play a huge role in these tense finals, making sure that the players keep a lid on their emotions and adrenaline. England’s Mark Clattenburg has been selected for the final in Paris, hardly a surprise given he is not only the best referee in England, but possible the whole of Europe. The man from Durham is used to intense games in the Premier League and is known for letting the game flow, even if it means going against the referee’s handbook – an excellent trait in an official. With this in mind I think he will understand the weight of pressure on the players’ shoulders and will let things go in  the first half.
