These two teams have vastly different objectives this season with Exeter City looking to secure a play-off spot in League Two whilst Newport County are looking to escape relegation to non-league.

Exeter have recovered from their stumble to go undefeated in their last four matches, placing them 6th in the table. However, they are still only in the play-off places by a mere two points and, although they are undefeated in their last four, could only win two of them.

Paul Tisdale’s men have been excellent in the final third throughout the season and have the joint second-best goal-scoring record in the division with 65 goals in 40 games whilst they have also found the back of the net nine times in those four previously mentioned matches. However, their poor defensive performance this season is why they are not in contention for automatic promotion. Exeter have conceded 48 goals overall this season – the fifth-worst in the top seven. Furthermore, they have kept just one clean sheet since 4th February.

The Grecian’s have a poor points total from home matches this season and have taken 16 fewer points at St James’ Park this season than they have on their travels. Having said that, this can be put down to a bad spell which stretched right from August until November 2016 and, since then, they have lost just once and taken 22 points from a possibly 33 on home soil since 12th November.

Newport secured a vital three points last time out as they beat Crawley Town 1-0. However, they are still quite deep in the relegation-zone and are five points from safety with some very difficult fixtures on the horizon, starting away at Exeter on Saturday.

As you would expect from a team in the drop-zone, the Exiles have been poor in both boxes over the course of the campaign having conceded 64 and scored just 44. Having said that, it is worth mentioning that they have found the back of the net in their last six matches which shows that they are at least having a real go at survival and have not given up yet.

Much like Exeter, Mike Flynn’s Newport side are better on their travels than they are at home having taken 19 points as opposed to the 17 they have at Rodney Parade – both from 20 games. The Exiles may have scored in their last six away matches, in addition to the six overall, but it must also be pointed out that they have won just twice on their travels since 19th November 2016.

Exeter are the favourites here for a very good reason and I will certainly be backing them. With Newport seemingly able to find the back of the net with relative ease on their travels recently, Exeter will know they will need to score at least two to come out on top and, given their firepower, they’re unlikely to have a problem doing so. ‘Exeter to Win and Over 1.5 Goals’ is worth going for at 11/10.
